What is a Working at Heights Certificate?
A Working at Heights Certificate is proof that you have completed awareness and theory training in safe work at height. Under the Work at Height Regulations 2005, every job at height must be properly planned, appropriately supervised and carried out by competent people - and training is how that competence starts.
The certificate shows any employer that you understand the risks of working at height, the avoid-prevent-minimise hierarchy, how to plan a job and how to choose the right access equipment. It is your evidence of awareness training, valid for three years across the UK. Where a task needs equipment-specific practical training - MEWPs, tower scaffolds or harness systems - that is a separate, additional requirement.
Why you need a Working at Heights Certificate
Falls from height are consistently the leading cause of fatal injury to workers in Great Britain, according to HSE statistics. Because of that, many UK employers, principal contractors and agencies ask for evidence of work at height awareness training before anyone steps on a ladder, roof or platform.
Who needs certification
- Construction workers - roofers, scaffold users, fit-out trades
- Maintenance and facilities staff - ladder, podium and MEWP users
- Warehouse and logistics staff - mezzanine, racking and high-bay work
- Cleaners and window cleaners - external and atrium access
- Telecoms and utilities engineers - poles, masts and elevated plant
- Manufacturing staff - gantries, walkways and overhead services
- Anyone who could fall a distance liable to cause injury - even from low platforms
A Working at Heights Certificate is not just a piece of paper - it shows you take falls seriously and know how to plan work so nobody gets hurt.
Certificate renewal and refresher training
Your certificate is valid for three years from the date of issue. After that, complete our Working at Heights Refresher course to renew for another three years. Refresh sooner if your tasks, equipment or working methods change materially.
Certificate verification
Every certificate carries a unique alphanumeric code. Anyone with the code can use our online portal to confirm:
- The certificate is genuine and issued by British Working at Heights
- The name matches the holder
- The certificate is within its validity period
- The course completed covers work at height awareness aligned with WAHR 2005
UK standards and accreditation explained
The Work at Height Regulations 2005
WAHR 2005 is the primary law on work at height in the UK, sitting under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, with risk assessment duties from the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. Our course is built around these duties, so your certificate represents awareness training that reflects current UK law. The HSE does not certify training providers directly - we align our content with the regulations and HSE guidance.
CPD accreditation
CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. Our certificate is CPD accredited, meaning the training has been independently assessed and approved as meeting quality standards. For supervisors, safety officers and managers accumulating CPD points, this contributes towards annual development requirements.
RoSPA and IIRSM
RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) is an internationally recognised safety organisation, and IIRSM (International Institute of Risk and Safety Management) is a respected professional body. Their assurance and approval confirm that our course meets rigorous health and safety education standards.
Digital vs paper certificates
Our certificate is issued as a high quality PDF usable digitally or printed. Advantages over traditional paper certificates include instant delivery, easy storage, unlimited copies, email sharing and always-on access through your account.
