Understanding working at height training requirements in the UK

The Work at Height Regulations 2005 (WAHR) are the primary law on work at height in the UK. They require employers to make sure every job at height is properly planned, appropriately supervised and carried out by competent people. The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 sets the wider duty to protect workers, and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 add the duty to assess risks before work starts.

6. Selecting work equipment - ladders, stepladders, podiums, tower scaffolds and MEWPs
7. Ladder safety - pre-use checks, angles and three points of contact
8. Emergency procedures - harness basics, anchor points and what to do when something goes wrong

The cost of inadequate working at height training

Falls are among the most serious incidents in any workplace. Falls from height are consistently the leading cause of fatal injury to workers in Great Britain, according to HSE statistics - and even a low fall can end a career.

A single serious fall can cost a UK business tens of thousands of pounds in claims, insurance, lost productivity and temporary cover. Training is vastly cheaper.

Working at Heights Certificate validity and refresher training

Your Working at Heights Certificate is valid for three years from the date of issue. A refresher is recommended around every three years, or sooner if your tasks, equipment or working methods change materially.
