WAHR 2005 sets a simple order of priority. First, avoid work at height where you can, for example by using extendable tools from the ground. If you cannot avoid it, prevent falls with safe places of work, guardrails or working platforms. If some risk remains, minimise the distance and consequences of a fall with equipment such as fall arrest systems, used as a last resort.

What should I check before using a ladder?

Check the stiles, rungs and feet for damage, dirt or wear. Make sure the ladder is the right type for the task, rests on firm, level ground, and is set at the correct angle - one unit out for every four units up.
