Check the stiles for bends and splits, the rungs for damage and grease, the feet for wear, and any locking mechanisms. Take damaged ladders out of use immediately.

Set the ladder on firm, level ground that is free of ice, grease and loose material. Never balance the feet on packing, bricks or boxes to gain height.

Safe ladder use is the combination of the right equipment for the task, a sound ladder, firm ground, the correct angle, a secured top and disciplined climbing technique. Every step of the 8 step method exists to remove one specific cause of a fall.

The pre-use check

Before every use, walk the ladder with your eyes. Check the stiles for bends, cracks and splits. Check every rung for damage, looseness, mud and grease. Check the feet are present, undamaged and gripping. On stepladders and combination ladders, check the locking bars and hinges work properly. Any defect means the ladder comes out of use and gets reported - no exceptions.

The 1-in-4 rule

A leaning ladder should rest at about 75 degrees, which you can set with the 1-in-4 rule: for every 4 units of height to the contact point, bring the base 1 unit away from the wall. A quick body check works too - stand with your toes against the feet of the ladder and stretch your arms out straight. Your hands should land comfortably on a rung.

Securing the ladder

The base can slide and the top can slip, so secure the ladder before climbing. Tie the stiles at the top to a strong anchor point wherever possible. If tying is not practical, use a proprietary stability device or wedge the base against a fixed object. Footing by a colleague is the last resort, not the default. Extend the ladder at least 1 metre above the landing point if you are stepping off it.

Do not stand on the top three steps of a swing-back stepladder unless there is a suitable handhold, and never straddle the steps or stand on the rear rail.
